# From discovery to close: how to manage a full-cycle B2B sale

In a full-cycle sale, each stage picks up what the last one left and prepares the next.

A full-cycle B2B sale doesn’t really start when an opportunity appears in the pipeline. By then we have already decided who we are selling to, had a first conversation and begun to understand what that company is trying to solve.

The hard part comes afterwards: keeping that context as the opportunity moves forward.

It is easy for discovery to end up as a few notes, for the demo to be prepared separately, for the proposal to be built from a template and for negotiation to start when someone asks about price. The process can have every stage it needs and still have each one working from different information.

When that happens, the salesperson has to rebuild the opportunity in every conversation.

What is learnt at the start has to travel through the whole process and inform every decision whenever a new question comes up.

## What comes out of discovery changes everything that follows

In discovery we can find out a great deal that goes well beyond the initial problem: what the company is trying to achieve, how it works today, what it has tried, what impact the situation has and who is involved in the decision.

All of that has to show in what comes next.

If we know the problem relates to a specific process, the demo focuses on that process. If we find there is a technical constraint, there is little point waiting until the proposal to check it. And if someone else with decision-making power appears, it is worth bringing them in before the opportunity goes too far.

That is why the demo can’t just be the next slot in the calendar.

It can serve to check whether our reading of the problem was right. The prospect may react in a way that confirms our hypothesis or reveals something we missed in the first conversation. Either way, we are learning something about the opportunity.

It also avoids one of the usual problems in SaaS sales: showing too much product.

When a platform has a lot of features, there is a natural tendency to show everything it can do. But a company trying to solve a specific problem probably doesn’t need to see every part of the product to decide whether moving forward makes sense.

What comes out of discovery decides what is worth showing and what can be left out.

The same goes for the proposal. If the document could have been sent to any company in the same sector just by changing the name, we are probably wasting some of the information gathered in the conversations.

A good proposal captures what has been understood: the problem, the scope discussed, the proposed solution and the conditions needed to make it happen.

It doesn’t need to be an overly complex document. What matters is that the prospect can recognise in it the conversation they have had with us.

## Negotiation is part of the diagnosis too

When an objection comes up, especially about price, it is tempting to respond straight away with value arguments or a discount.

But a price objection can have different causes.

Perhaps the budget really is too small. Perhaps the company doesn’t yet see enough impact. Priorities may have shifted, or the person in front of us may need to convince someone else before going further.

The right response depends a great deal on what the real problem is.

That is why negotiation starts before the proposal arrives. Earlier in the process we have already been able to understand how important the problem is, what alternatives exist, who is involved in the decision and which conditions could get in the way of an agreement.

That information makes it easier to read what is going on when resistance appears.

It also helps to spot opportunities that look further along than they really are. Someone can be convinced the solution makes sense and still lack the authority to approve the purchase. If procurement, senior management or IT haven’t been involved yet, the deal may be a lot less advanced than a good discovery call suggests.

Managing the full cycle means keeping exactly that view.

Not every opportunity has to go all the way to signature. Along the way we may find the problem isn’t enough of a priority, that another solution fits better or that the conditions needed to move forward aren’t there.

That is useful commercial information too.

The difference is that, when there is a fit, the process moves forward without losing the context built up along the way. Discovery, demo, proposal and negotiation stop being isolated conversations and become part of one opportunity.

That is how I work in [the full-cycle option](https://duranb2b.com/en/services#modalidad-2): I handle the account myself from the first call to signature, with no hand-offs between people where context gets lost.

The close comes when both sides have reduced the uncertainty enough: which problem is to be solved, which solution makes sense, who needs to be involved and under what conditions it can happen.

Running a full-cycle sale means knowing at every point whether to push on, wait or walk away, with everything said so far on the table.
